Artificial Intelligence Transparency Statement
Overview
This statement explains how Bestow develops, deploys, and governs artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI (GenAI) across our platform and internal operations. We use AI responsibly and transparently to deliver faster, smarter, and more accessible life insurance experiences - while protecting the data entrusted to us by our customers, carriers, distribution, and administration partners.
1. AI at Bestow
As a technology platform serving insurance carriers and distribution and administration partners, we use AI to accelerate development, deliver value for our carrier partners, and support our employees within rigorous data protection standards.
Our AI footprint spans three domains:
- Internal productivity tools - AI-tools that enhance and improve our internal business operations, assisting us with all forms of document creation, research, and communications.
- Platform development capabilities - AI-assisted and agentic coding and enhanced workflows that help us ideate, prototype and build products based on Bestow's SaaS platform better and faster.
- Partner-facing services - AI-powered tools that help partners and agents serve customers more effectively.
2. Commitment to Security & Privacy
Information security and data privacy are foundational. Every AI tool, whether developed internally or procured from a third party, undergoes a formal review before it may be used by our IT, security and legal teams with Bestow data.
Key commitment: Bestow does not permit AI vendors to train their models on Bestow's confidential corporate data or customer data. Model training opt-out is a standard condition of approval for all third-party AI tools.
3. AI Principles at Bestow
Our use of AI is guided by core principles that apply across all internal tools, platform capabilities, and product features:
- Transparency - We are open about how and where AI is used in our products and operations.
- Human In the Loop - Consequential decisions, especially in underwriting, retain meaningful human review and oversight.
- Privacy by Design - Customer and partner data is handled under strict classification and minimization standards.
- Fairness & Non-Discrimination - AI is evaluated for bias and discriminatory impact where applicable.
- Security - All AI tools undergo security review; where practicable, Bestow utilizes DLP controls to restrict unauthorized uses of unapproved tools.
- Accountability - Our Data Governance Council provides strategic oversight and policy ownership for all AI use.
- Vendor Diligence - Third-party AI providers are assessed for data handling, contractual protections, and known vulnerabilities before approval.
- Regulatory Compliance - AI deployments align with applicable insurance regulations and emerging AI-specific legal requirements.
4. Governance Framework
4.1 Data Governance Council
Our Data Governance Council, a sub-committee to the Risk & Compliance Committee, provides executive-level oversight of AI adoption decisions. The Council establishes and updates Bestow’s AI policies, manages AI-related risk, and governs data sharing and availability across AI tools.
4.2 AI Tool Vetting & Approval Process
No AI tool may be used with Bestow data until it has completed our formal multi-stage review. Requests are submitted through a governed intake process and evaluated against security, legal, and business criteria.
5. Customer & Partner Data Protection
We maintain strict controls on what data may be submitted to AI tools.
- No AI training on customer data - Third-party AI providers may not use customer data to train their models.
- Confidential data - Submission requires specific, tool-level authorization documented in the AI Tools registry.
6. AI in Bestow's Platform & Products
We are committed to integrating AI thoughtfully into our insurance technology platform. We employ reasonable and appropriate controls to ensure AI use aligns with intended purposes, regulatory requirements, and the expectations of our partners and end customers.
6.1 Underwriting & Risk Assessment
In close consultation with our carrier partners, we evaluate potential AI and machine learning models considered for the platform for bias to reduce the likelihood that they will produce discriminatory outcomes prohibited under applicable insurance regulations.
6.2 Internal Operations
Our employees use a curated set of approved GenAI tools - including conversational AI assistants, AI-assisted coding tools, and document analysis platforms - through Bestow corporate accounts (not personal accounts), and are subject to our AI Acceptable Use Policy.
7. Regulatory & Standards Alignment
- NIST AI Risk Management Framework - Our governance is informed by the NIST AI RMF, including risk identification, measurement, and management practices.
- State Insurance Regulations - Utilization of AIcomplies with state insurance regulations, including NAIC guidance on AI in insurance and applicable anti-discrimination laws.
- Data Privacy Laws - AI tool use is subject to our broader data privacy program, which addresses applicable federal and state consumer data protection requirements.
